Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum chain, which kept running on Proof of Work after the 2016 split. When Ethereum moved to Proof of Stake in 2022, ETC became one of the main options for GPU miners.
Ethereum Classic network parameters
| Parameter | Value |
| Algorithm | Etchash |
| Block time | About 13 seconds |
| Block reward | 2.048 ETC; reduced by 20% every 5 million blocks |
| Maximum supply | About 210 million ETC |
ETC and Ethereum are not the same
Ethereum (ETH) can no longer be mined: it has run on Proof of Stake since 2022. Ethereum Classic keeps Proof of Work and is mined with the Etchash algorithm.
What hardware you need
You can mine ETC with GPUs or with Etchash ASICs, which are far more efficient. If you're moving from GPUs to ASICs, also compare the Kaspa and Zcash pools.
Why mine Ethereum Classic with EMCD
- Fees from 1.5% and daily payouts.
- Dashboard with hashrate, miner status, and rewards.
- Watcher links and API.
- 24/7 support.
The payout model and minimum payout are listed in the table on this page.
GPU or ASIC for Ethereum Classic
Ethereum Classic can still be mined with GPUs, which makes it popular with miners who have graphics cards left over from Ethereum mining. However, Etchash ASICs are far more efficient and account for a growing share of network hashrate, so GPU miners should compare their power costs carefully in the calculator before committing.
The ETC block reward drops by 20% every 5 million blocks, roughly every two years, so income per block declines in steps over time. ETC addresses use the same 0x format as Ethereum, so when setting up payouts, make sure the address is on the Ethereum Classic network. Ethereum (ETH) itself can no longer be mined: it has run on Proof of Stake since 2022.
